It was a beautiful November day with a a welcome spot of really warm weather. Time to do some test photography and videography with the new camera. They say practice makes perfect but that is not really true. Systematic practice makes perfect; you have to pick the right things to practice in order to get better at anything.

With that in mind Kateri and I did a photo walk in Appleton to test out some of the features of my new Canon R5 camera. You can see more of Kateri on Facebook

First up was some practice on the focus system. Kateri did a few walkbys and I used a few focus modes. This was with my 135mm f/2 Canon lens. My favorite portrait lens but not the easiest to focus at f/2. As you can see from the pics the focus performance was excellent!

We did a few different apertures during the test and her is an example of the impact of aperture on depth of field. The left picture is at f/2 and the right is f/5.6.

Here is another example, more extreme, of the impact of aperture. F/2 versus f/11 is a pretty dramatic change. Both photos used her ring as a focus point.

The next pictures were taken while working on different video settings. We’ll have a post up of the video test results as soon as we dig out of the avalanche of projects! Lots of different brightness and color spaces in these pictures – can’t wait to spend more time on learning about the video system on the R5!

We finished up our time just playing around by the fountain. Did a nice variety of styles, poses and color treatments.

Our last gallery includes some black and white conversions of our favorite pictures. I love color but at the same time there is something so compelling about monotone photos. They seem to be more pure and the emotions of the subject just come out more.

You can see more of my black & white (analog photography) at my companion site Sun and silver.photo Here we focus on 19th century photography including tintypes and film.

Here is a memory from a few years ago featuring Kateri!
